Photoshop Collages
For this project, the task was to combine 3 or more photos to follow the theme determined by the definition assigned to each collage. As someone who is deeply nostalgic and curious about the world, I decided to choose words that resonate with me and my emotions. The corresponding images complete the vision I had going into this project, and the word in each collage elevates the feelings these combined images create.
Photoshop Album Redesigns
For this project, we had free rein to choose from three different media categories (movie posters, book covers, or [music] album covers) where we would then create three new redesigns. I enjoy so many different genres of music, that this category was a no brainer for me. Growing up listening to Sade with my Dad, her album covers and songs are engrained in my brain. I always admired the simplicity about them while still incorporating artistic elements. Soldier of Love is my favorite album from her discography, and the cover displays so much texture and depth that it allowed me to test different avenues with new designs.
Illustrator Movie Posters
This project posed a challenge for a few reasons. Not being able to use words in our final creations was one bump in the road, while another was managing to keep these designs in the minimalist design 'sphere. Finding movies that had easily identifiable symbols and/or characters was the path I decided to pursue for this project. I felt that Alice in Wonderland and How to Train Your Dragon had aspects and scenes from their respective movies that would allow viewers to identify them easily. Keeping monotone color schemes made the minimalist design requirement a lot easier to manage and work around.
Illustrator Logo Redesigns
The task for this project was to find a logo that spoke to us where we would then be able to find enough elements in it to create an identical replica along with three differing redesigns. Working with the Ferrari logo was a challenge but very rewarding after it was all said and done. Keeping the brand colors, the iconic prancing horse, or both, was an important goal of mine throughout this process.
Illustrator Personal Logo
Getting to brainstorm and experiment for this project was so much fun! Looking within, and identifying things that are important to yourself that you’d want to incorporate into a logo was a process and then bringing them to life was even more of one. Living close to Lake Michigan and traveling down to the Gulf Coast of Florida to visit family almost every year, I was able to learn more about, and appreciate these powerful bodies of water. I knew I wanted to use water as an element in my logo, and The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai was my main inspiration for my personal logo.
InDesign Logo Branding
Expanding off of the personal logo design, we were tasked with creating physical staples that included our personal branding. Business cards (front and back), stock paper, envelopes, and post cards (front and back) were the requirements for this project. I was able to take elements from my logo and subtly place them throughout these items. Choosing calming colors to balance out the bold logo worked really well in the final designs.
Illustrator Posterzine
After studying The Shape of Design by Frank Chimero throughout the 2023 Fall semester, the task was to create a poster/magazine where corresponding questions were assigned. I wanted to curate this to a nod at my childhood and a collection of things in my life that I love.
Illustrator Book Illustrations
This was the first step to a two step project. We were given a list of public domain books that we were then supposed to read and create 10 illustrations depicting varying scenes throughout the book. I chose Little Women and was able to use inspiration clips from the movies while including important details from the books. I kept a monotone color scheme to help identify the characters and their specific scenes.
Book Codex
For step two of this project, we had the task of copying the entire text file of the books we chose into InCopy where we formatted and found errors we didn’t want included in our final copy. From there, we copied our edited text into InDesign, where we then designed book covers in Illustrator to complete this project.
Collaborative Doodles
The task for this project was completely individualized and personal. We were encouraged to choose something meaningful to us, and for me, that meant collaborating with my grandfather on his raw doodle designs. I began by scanning his original sketches and digitizing them so I could bring them into Photoshop and Illustrator for refinement. Once the black-and-white files were cleaned up, I added color and subtle touches of my own to give the work a refreshed life while still preserving his style. These finalized pieces were then prepared and formatted so I could sell them at the university’s ceramics and print sale, making the project both creatively fulfilling and deeply sentimental.
